My Path Into Astrology

My relationship with astrology began when I was about fourteen years old.

My family had recently gone through a major change. My father had taken us out of the Jehovah's Witnesses, and suddenly books and ideas that had previously not been allowed in our home became available to me. My mother began bringing books on occult and esoteric subjects home from the public library, and among them was a book about astrology.

I read it again and again until I understood the basic concepts. I was fascinated.

At that age, I was also trying to understand intuitive and clairvoyant experiences I had been having since I was five years old, experiences that were becoming increasingly frequent. Astrology gave me something I desperately needed: a structure. It provided a way to organize patterns and impressions into signs, planets, houses, aspects, transits and horoscopes. I began to understand that these patterns weren't limited to individual people. They could be observed in organizations, governments, organic systems and, in one way or another, almost everything.

By seventeen, another door opened when my father took me to a Tarot card reader. He sat with me throughout the reading, listening intently. During that reading, she predicted that I would meet two influential teachers who would eventually help shape my life: Dr. Christopher Hills and Dr. Bruce Lipton. Her reading was so remarkably accurate that I immediately wanted to understand how Tarot worked and began studying the cards myself.

Around the same time, I discovered a local metaphysical bookstore. One day while visiting the store, I met one of the psychics who gave readings there and decided to have a reading myself. As fate would have it, the psychic used psychometry. This was when I became interested in the practice of receiving intuitive impressions while holding an object associated with another person.

I was fascinated to learn that almost any object could be used, as long as the person had touched it or kept it close to their body.

The reading was amazingly accurate. The psychic told me that I was very psychic and that he believed I would be particularly good at psychometry. So I began practicing relentlessly on anyone willing to let me try my new skill. I learned to take the leap of faith necessary to capture the stream of information that would come to me.

Within about a year, I was working at that same bookstore giving psychometry readings. To my surprise, the readings became so popular that the income eventually surpassed what I was earning in my other profession as a cosmetologist. For a period of my young life, psychic readings became my livelihood.

Searching for the Mechanism

That question would eventually become one of the threads running through my entire life.

At nineteen, I was standing in the metaphysical bookstore one day talking with an employee about my desire to find some kind of scientific explanation for psychometry. She pointed me toward a newly arrived book called Nuclear Evolution by Dr. Christopher Hills.

I bought it with nearly the last of the money I had.

The book was more than a thousand pages long and packed with ideas that were difficult for me to comprehend at that age. I spent approximately two years working through it, reading it repeatedly and then seeking out other books Dr. Hills had written.

By twenty-one, that search had taken me to Boulder Creek, California, where I lived on the campus of the University of the Trees, founded by Dr. Hills.

There I became deeply involved in the study of consciousness, meditation and Creative Conflict, a process that challenged me to examine how unconscious beliefs could influence perception, behavior and the choices we make.

Astrology remained with me throughout this period. I continued casting natal horoscopes and examining my own patterns through astrology. Later, I began studying the I Ching and discovered that it provided another fascinating lens through which to consider astrological transits and timing.

The more I learned, the more my original question expanded.

Consciousness Meets Biology

One of the most important relationships that grew from my connection with Dr. Hills was my friendship with Dr. Bruce Lipton.

Dr. Hills introduced us, and Bruce and I became close friends. Because I was already deeply familiar with much of Dr. Hills' work, I had a conceptual foundation that allowed Bruce and me to explore biological ideas at considerable depth.

Some of my education in biology happened in an unusually personal setting.

Bruce would tutor me privately, and we would spend hours talking on his deck overlooking the San Francisco Bay Area. Sometimes those conversations continued for most of the day, until the sun went down and the fog began rolling up the mountains. Because I had a long drive home, I sometimes stayed overnight, and our conversations would continue while we cooked dinner and sipped good wine.

I also had opportunities to accompany Bruce into the laboratory on a couple of occasions. He introduced me to his research and used graphics to help me understand his ideas about how the cellular membrane functions. Although I had used microscopes in high school, spending time with Bruce and learning about his research deepened my understanding of microscopy and biological processes.

One concept that particularly influenced me was the idea of the cell as an information-processing system. A cell receives information from its environment, processes signals and responds to those signals through biological mechanisms. From my perspective, it was difficult not to see parallels with computing. In that sense, I began thinking of individual cells almost as miniature biological computers.

That interest eventually led me toward advanced digital microscopy and extremely high-speed video capture at the microscopic level.

Bruce helped me understand biology at a much deeper level and encouraged me to think about the relationships among living organisms, their environments, perception and consciousness. He was, and still is, one of the most influential teachers in my life.

At the time, I couldn't have known how important these ideas would eventually become to my own thinking. Years later, when I became immersed in computers, programming, animation and information systems, some of those biological concepts would reappear in an entirely new context.

When Astrology Met the Computer

When I first learned astrology, personal computers weren't part of everyday life.

Astrologers relied heavily on ephemerides and manual calculations to construct charts. I found the process laborious, and I was slow at it.

Then, at twenty-six, I got my first computer: an Apple Macintosh SE with a 40-megabyte hard drive.

For me, it was transformative.

Astrology software could perform much of the repetitive calculation involved in constructing a horoscope, allowing me to spend more time looking at the chart itself. I could work with more horoscopes, examine more transits and compare more patterns.

The increased volume changed the way I saw astrology.

Patterns that had once been difficult to recognize became increasingly visible. Cycles repeated. Relationships emerged. Over time, I became increasingly interested in mundane astrology and the possibility of examining astrological patterns not only in individual lives but in collective events.

Meanwhile, computers were changing my professional life as well.

As new business software became available, I began using computers to automate and streamline my own business. I became fascinated with the relationship between better information, more efficient workflows and better decision-making.

When the Internet arrived, I immediately recognized its potential. I learned TCP/IP and packet technology and, by the mid-1990s, began building websites for my own business. Before long, I was building websites for customers as well.

I began studying programming, C++, web development and 3D animation.

Then something unexpected happened.

As I learned to manipulate animations with scripting languages, my technical world and my astrological world began to merge.

I could create a scene, establish its properties, define behaviors, introduce relationships among objects and then use code to cause events to unfold along a timeline.

And I started looking at astrology differently.

Seeing Astrology Through the Eyes of a Programmer

The conceptual breakthrough became clearer as I learned more about object-oriented programming.

I began thinking of a natal horoscope almost as an Object.

In programming, an object can possess properties and behaviors. Looking through this lens, I began imagining the signs and houses of a horoscope as Properties, while aspects and transits were more like Behaviors and Relationships acting upon an object.

Then there was the timeline.

Animation software had taught me to think in terms of events unfolding through time. Astrology had been showing me something remarkably similar for years: a natal configuration established at a particular moment, followed by planetary cycles and transits unfolding throughout a lifetime.

The analogy became increasingly difficult for me to ignore:

That question eventually led me toward the idea of astrology as a kind of cosmic scripting language.

I don't present this idea as a proven scientific conclusion. It is a hypothesis and an evolving framework through which I continue to investigate something I have been observing for most of my life.

The planets move according to extraordinarily consistent mathematical relationships. Cycles exist within cycles. Biological organisms receive and respond to environmental information. Human lives unfold within larger planetary, solar and galactic systems.

As someone who has spent decades working with both astrology and computers, I can't help noticing the resemblance to systems composed of objects, properties, relationships, behaviors, events and timelines.

And my earlier experiences with biology added another layer to the question.

If an individual cell can be understood as an information-processing biological system, what happens when we begin looking at larger and larger systems through a similar lens?

This is where much of my work today lives: at the intersection of astrology, consciousness, biology, technology, programming, cycles and systems thinking.

Where the Journey Has Led Me

More than fifty years have passed since I first opened that astrology book as a fourteen-year-old.

The technology has changed almost beyond recognition.

Today we can calculate planetary positions instantly, visualize enormous quantities of astronomical information, model complex systems, manipulate digital timelines and explore relationships that would have required extraordinary amounts of manual work when I began.

But in some ways, I'm still pursuing the same question I was asking as a teenager: What is the mechanism?

I don't believe I have all the answers. In fact, the longer I have studied these subjects, the more interesting the questions have become.

Today I use astrology alongside Tarot and the I Ching while continuing to explore relationships among consciousness, planetary cycles, biological systems, information systems and the possibility that the Solar System and larger galactic environment may function in ways we have only begun to understand.

My purpose with Anthony Aaron Astrology is not simply to tell people what their horoscope says.

I want to explore astrology as a sacred science, experiment with new ways of visualizing its patterns, share what I have learned through decades of observation, and continue investigating what astrology may ultimately be showing us.

The animated horoscope and timelines on this website are part of that exploration. They are attempts to make visible something I have gradually learned to see in my mind: a universe of interacting cycles, relationships and events unfolding through time.

For those who come here for a personal reading, my goal is more immediate. I want to use the tools I have spent a lifetime studying to help people look more carefully at their own patterns, cycles, timing and possibilities.
